What isBehavioural Health?
According to the National Institute of Health in the United States, behavioural health is classified as “a state of mental/emotional being and/or choices and actions that affect wellness”.
Behavioural health problems “include substance abuse or misuse, alcohol and drug addiction, serious psychological distress, suicide, and mental and substance use disorders”.
For us, behavioural health means the evaluation of how behavioural disorders such as alcohol and drug dependency, eating disorders and gambling addiction can affect your mental and physical well-being. An individual chooses to adopt certain behaviours that have a damaging impact on himself and others.
How does it differfrom mental health?
According to the World Health Organization, mental health is “a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.”
Mental health disorders can be caused by genetic inheritance and chemical imbalances in the brain.
Such mental health disorders include autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression, obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, Tourette’s, and anxiety disorder.
These can be treated through a combination of medication and psychological therapy.
What are the links betweenbehavioural healthand mental health?
Behavioural disorders often occur alongside mental health disorders.
While they need to be considered separately, behavioural and mental health disorders are often interrelated. Accordingly, both sets of disorders need to be thoroughly assessed if the patient is to experience true progress.
There is little point in prescribing medication if behaviours go unaddressed.
Similarly, there is little point in curbing behaviours if underlying physiological or psychological issues are left untouched.
What is especially confusing is that some mental disorders can be classified as behavioural disorders and vice-versa.
